OUP003 Teaching General Music  Approaches, Issues, and Viewpoints  / Paperback by Carlos Abril and Brent Gault

A variety of approaches to teaching general music influence music teaching and learning and inform the instructional practice of music educators. Although these approaches are valuable, problems arise when teachers choose to utilize a given approach without thoughtfully considering its role in the curriculum and its potential to meaningfully engage children in music learning. Important approaches to teaching general music must be understood, critically examined, and reimagined for their potential in school and community music education programs. This book creates a panoramic view of general music pedagogy and to provide critical lenses through which to view these frameworks and practices. The collection includes a description of each of the distinct approaches to general music teaching, including Dalcroze, informal, interdisciplinary, Kodály, music learning theory, Orff Schulwerk, social constructivism, and world music pedagogy. In addition, it provides critical analyses of teaching systems in light of the new ways children around the world engage with and experience music in their lives. This book does not promote or advocate for any one approach to teaching music in the classroom or in other group settings. Instead, it is designed as a conversation of the various approaches, highlighting their perceived and documented benefits, limits, challenges, and potentials, as well as to offer myriad lenses through which to reread, rethink, and repractice these approaches.
